How To Make Money With Google Adsense
What Is Google Adsense?
Google Adsense is owned and operated by Google who made their name in the search engines business and who have the largest share of online searches. Google Adsense is a revenue earning program for blog or website owners, called publishers. Publishers simply host advertising on their site from Google clients and are paid according to how many times an advert is viewed or clicked upon by your site visitors. Google Adsense is a simple but effective means of moneterising your site with little effort.
A publisher, that is you, can open a free Google Adsense account Here. Please note that this is not a referral link, we do not earn any money from you visiting the Adsense site.
Once you have signed up for your free Google Adsense account you can start to create image or text based adverts in many shapes and sizes that suit your site. Google Adsense also allows you to determine the colour scheme, so you can match your adverts to your site or make them stand out by contrasting the colour scheme. You can also choose to host text based, image or video adverts so that you have control over the types of advertising that your visitors have access to.
Once you have created your Google Adsense adverts you simply copy and paste a small section of code into your site, in the place you wish to display your Google Adsense adverts. Adsense create this code for you and there is little technical knowledge required other than placing it within your website or blog. This code then allows Google Adsense to supply you with relevant adverts from within the advertising network that are directly relevant to your site. This is the clever bit because Google Adsense reads your site to find out what content it contains and displays adverts that are relevant. So for example if your site is a personal finance blog then Google Adsense will display adverts for credit cards, mortgages and other financial products, all of which will be relevant to your visitors and which makes them more likely to click on. Google Adsense will automatically change the adverts it displays on each of the separate web pages that make up your site, in order to reflect the content of that specific page. The great thing about Google Adsense is that you do not have to keep changing your adverts manually and they will never go out of date because Google Adsense will always supply the latest advertisements.
Making Money With Google Adsense
Now let’s move on to look at exactly how you can make money with Google Adsense. There are a variety of ways this can be achieved but the two favourite ways are via your own website or blog or via revenue sharing sites that you can join.
Making Money With A Google Adsense Website
Visitor Traffic
Firstly, it is unlikely that you will make any money using Google Adsense unless you first have a regular number of visitors. Our experience is that you need a minimum of 50-100 visitors per day to start making a little Google Adsense revenue. So spend some time building up your site’s visitor traffic first. Remember you can only make money with a Google Adsense website if you first have people viewing advertising that you display. Read our article Make Money Online Blogging, for more information about how to build your visitor traffic. This article is relevant whether you have a blog or a website.
Content
Create some interesting and high quality content for your site. It is important that visitors stay on your site for as long as possible as this will mean that they will view more advertising and are more likely to click on an advert, therefore boosting your Google Adsense revenue. Avoid article scrapping, where you download vast quantities of articles from article directories that offer free content, as this will turn off your visitors. Your content needs to be original and relevant to your site.
Our experience is that you need at least 50 pages of high quality, unique and relevant content to get started and begin to earn a reasonable Google Adsense revenue. The best way to do this is to write about subjects that interest you but that follow the general theme of your site, so if your site is a personal finance blog, write about money saving tips not about how to change a light bulb!
Research Your Niche
Before you even start your website you need to research your niche. There is no point in starting up another personal finance blog on a general subject if there are already thousands of similar sites. Try to keep your site focussed as this will ensure that you receive higher visitor numbers and your individual web pages will be directly relevant to them. You could set up a personal finance blog about budgeting or dedicated specifically to mortgage advice or household insurance.
Now that we have looked at how to structure your site and develop visitor traffic, we need to channel that traffic into revenue.
Google Adsense Ad Placement
Ad placement is one of the most fundamental aspects of maximising your Google Adsense revenue and without careful thought you are unlikely to make money with Google Adsense. Ad placement is a difficult balancing act between earning enough advertising revenue to make your site profitable, without putting off visitors by covering your site with excessive advertising units. Google Adsense have produced a helpful image to help understand what they deem are the hot zones for your Google Adsense advert placement. You can view it below;
The darker colour, the higher the visibility of your Google Adsense adverts and the more likely they will get clicked upon and earn you revenue. These are essentially the optimum placements for your Adsense adverts. By using this information you can incorporate Google Adsense into the quality content on your site.
Here are a few helpful dos and don’ts when thinking about your Google Adsense ad placement.

Google Adsense Unit Types
Google Adsense provides a wide range of advertising unit types to suit your site. There are leader board banners, which can be placed boldly across the top of your site, vertical skyscrapers which will fill large empty spaces down the side of your page or box based Adsense advertising units which can be inserted anywhere in the main body of your web page. You can view the full range of Adsense advertising units Here. Or simply by logging into your Google Adsense account and selecting the option to view Ad images, from the content creation section.
Before choosing your Google Adsense advertising units think carefully about where advertising would most effectively be displayed on your site and remember to take into account the Google Adsense hot zones. It is also important to note that if you are using Google Adsense for content, then you are limited to a maximum of three Adsense units per page, so choose them wisely. This is probably designed to prevent stuffing pages with lots of advertising and very little content. The best performing unit size is 300 x 250 which can be integrated into text or placed at the top of your site and have high visibility.
Blending or Contrasting
You also need to think carefully about how to present your Google Adsense advertising units to visitors. There are two primary preferred options, blending or contrasting.
Blending enables you to change the colour scheme of your Google Adsense units to match the colour scheme of your site and this has the effect of making it more likely that visitors will click on your adverts as they are less likely to be intrusive. An example of blending can be seen by the ad units at the top and left of this page. Visitors rarely like to feel that they are a machine for making money and blending enables them to view your site in the way that best suits them rather than being faced with large imposing advertising.
Contrasting on the other hand can be effective at generating a high impact effect for your visitors and help them clearly differentiate between what is advertising and what is simply site content. Well designed sites can use contrasting to enable visitors to view advertising that will be highly informative or helpful to them. So for example a website that provides information on electricity saving devices could help their visitors to benefit from contrasting their adverts and making them stand out, as the products advertised may be exactly what visitors are searching for. Be very careful with contrasting that it your advertising doesn’t dominate your site, it should enhance your visitor experience not put them off coming back!
